The summer months are busy with vacation travel and unless you’re an experienced traveler, you may find that organizing yourself and the family to live out of suitcases for a time is daunting. Additionally, leaving home can cause anxiety, especially if pets or thriving house plants are left behind. After just a week’s absence it’s not unusual to come home to wilted ferns, DOA orchids and sulking pets.

Getting you and the family ready

  • Make a list and check it twice. Determine what you need and what you have. Shop for necessities ahead of time, drug stores at destination sites can be quite expensive for personal care items. Take note: Electric chargers, power cords and toothbrushes are the most forgotten travel items.
  • Travel light, check with the airline for their baggage policy. Extra bags or overweight bag fees can multiply your airfare.
  • Plan out your wardrobe and coordinate items that can mix and match for different looks, layer for weather changes, and go from day to evening.
  • Roll, don’t fold. Rolling clothes takes up less space and reduces wrinkles from folding.
  • Plan to wash your clothes along the way. You can pack less, which is always lovely.
  • If you absolutely, positively cannot pack light, use space-saver compression bags to vacuum seal and reduce the volume of your clothes so you can get more into each suitcase.
  • Use your allowed carry-on bag for additional packing. Always keep valuable and essential items with you, such as passport, cash, jewelry, etc. In the words of a wise traveler: “Forget wasting personal-item allowance on a tiny purse. Bring a larger tote bag that can stash under the seat.”
  • A small, wheeled carry-on for each child will set them up with activities, snacks and a favorite stuffed animal for the duration of the trip.
  • Adhere to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) rules for carry-on items. Basically, all liquids brought onto planes must be in 3.4-ounce bottles or smaller and inside a quart-size baggie. Check out TSA’s 2017 Summer Travel Tips for more information. If you break the rules, they WILL take your stuff.

Getting the house ready

While you’re out and about having fun, you want the home front to be safe. Depending on how long you will be gone, an empty house can be a magnet for trouble so keeping your house looking “lived-in” while you’re gone is a good idea. The best solution is to have someone house-sit, especially if you have pets. If that’s not an option, here are some tips for protecting your home while you’re away.

  • Stop the newspaper and mail, or have someone pick them up for you.
  • Park your car in the garage.
  • Leave a light on in the house or set at least one light on a timer.
  • Install a motion-activated flood light outside.
  • Keep up yard maintenance, watering and trimming the grass.
  • Have a daily pet sitter to feed, water, walk and love your baby, or board your pet at a kennel.
  • If you have indoor plants check out 4 Ways to Water Indoor Plants While You’re Away.
  • Unplug small appliances and electronic devices and put the water heater in “vacation mode.”
  • Turn off water valves to dishwasher, washing machine and all sinks.
  • Set the thermostat to a comparable outside temperature so it won’t run extensively, but be mindful of pets or plants inside (not too hot, not too cold).
  • If you have a home security company, let them know you’re on vacation.
  • Be sure a neighbor can reach you in an emergency; share your itinerary and phone number.
  • Clean out the refrigerator and pantry of any foods that will go bad.
  • Run the garbage disposal one last time, empty all wastebaskets.

Living organized all the time

Getting organized to go on vacation is a reflection of what everyday life should be. You fine-tune space use and eliminate all non-essentials. Just as a neatly packed suitcase is a joy to behold, so is a home where everything has its place and clutter is minimal.

  • Imagine all your closets with custom closet storage systems, designed for each user’s specific needs, including tiered hanging rods, drawers and shoe racks.
  • An organized pantry ensures that only fresh and ready-to-use foodstuffs are taking up valuable space.
  • A laundry room with cabinets, bins and work countertops can facilitate getting all the laundry done in record time and keep dirty clothes out of sight until laundry day.
  • With custom garage storage cabinets you’ll have abundant storage space as well as clear floor space to park your vehicles.
